CNB Receives Preservation Award for Spear Block
6/6/2008
CAMDEN, Maine, June 6, 2008 - Preservation Project award. The award was presented to Camden National Bank President & Chief Executive Officer Gregory Dufour and Senior Vice President, Senior Market Manager Jack Williams at the Maine Downtown Center's 8th Annual Maine Downtown Conference & Awards Ceremony in Biddeford on June 6, 2008.
Built in 1853, the Spear Block Building was home to various small commercial Rockland businesses over the years. Camden National Bank acquired the Spear Block Building in 2004 and began extensive renovation of the property with local contractors and suppliers. In March 2007, Camden National relocated its busy Rockland branch to the renovated Spear Block Building as part of its commitment to provide bank customers with greater access and convenience and to help promote the City of Rockland's economic growth and the vibrancy of its downtown.
The Maine Downtown Center is a program of the Maine Development Foundation devoted to fostering new vitality at the heart of Maine Communities. The mission of the Maine Downtown Center is to foster downtown development that is dynamic and community-based, and results in economic development, business growth, job creation, housing revitalization, historic preservation, and cultural enhancement.
"We are excited to have our revitalization efforts with the Spear Block recognized by the Maine Downtown Center for its contribution to the downtown Rockland community," said Dufour. "With little exception, we kept the exterior of the entire Spear Block Building as it was when it was constructed in 1853. We tried not only to maintain the historical architecture of the Spear Block, which is part of the great character of downtown Rockland, but also to tie it in with other notable downtown Rockland renovation projects like the Strand Theatre and the Farnsworth Museum."
